building process
when f2a builds as well as designs, the construction team isn’t handed a set of drawings and left to interpret them. our studio and site teams operate as one. when something unexpected comes up, and it always does, there is no translation required between the people interpreting code and designing and the people realizing the vision.
we don't think of our construction crew as labour to be managed. they are a team in the same sense a mountaineering team is a team: they pass tools, they hold each other's lives in their hands, and they need to be committed to the work. at f2a, the site crew includes woodworkers, a systems specialist, and carpenters who have worked together across multiple projects. they understand the materials deeply, and they know how we build and why. when a problem surfaces on site, it gets solved by the same people who designed the detail. quickly, without time wasted on phone tag chain between consultant and contractor.
our approach to construction integrates prefabrication and digital fabrication where it adds precision and efficiency. panellized assemblies, pre-cut components, and detailed shop drawings reduce waste, compress timelines, and bring a level of quality control to site that conventional stick-build methods rarely achieve. we design for how things will be built, not just how they will look.
on projects where f2a acts as construction administrator rather than builder, we bring the same integration. we review shop drawings for design intent, not just code compliance. we visit sites with the eyes of people who have built, which means we catch things that a purely administrative review would miss. the practical result for clients is fewer surprises, lower risk, and a building that reflects the design intent all the way to the finished detail.
f2a construction takes on projects in the nelson area. on projects elsewhere, we work with trusted contractors and pre-fabricators, and maintain close involvement throughout. in both cases, the design and construction teams are in continuous conversation from first sketch to finished floor.
