DESIGN PROCESS

as part of each of our proposals, we set out a list that identifies the tasks we will complete over the entire design process. This helps you understand our scope of work (defined by the Architectural Institute of British Columbia) and serves as a checklist during design that helps us to complete the work exactly as agreed.

our culture of design is to work as a team, in our studio – where good ideas flourish and the lesser concepts are edited but often recorded as they may serve other projects. We draw on precedents, clients’ inspiration images, and past works. We work on paper to start, which we find to be quick-thinking. As designs take shape, we model them in our building information modelling software, export basic drawings and work into them with trace paper. Once we’ve arrived at a strong concept and rendered it spatially proportional, we provide drawings and a corresponding cost estimate. In short, we repeat this problem-solving and presentation process three times to arrive at a permitted design.

an architect’s involvement in a project is formally divided into five phases (SD-CA)

We offer any of these sequential phases, starting with the schematic design phase.

We work with a contractor to realize all projects outside of Nelson (where we are now based). We visit all of our construction sites about once per month during construction and provide field review reports as required to direct and document the work.
